When was the last time you gave yourself a gift?
This is, after all, the gift-giving season. Who better to receive gifts than
you -- and who knows you better than you yourself? All too often we put
ourselves at the bottom of the gift list, or overlook the fact that we are
important, too, as we look for gifts for parents, children, siblings,
friends, co-workers -- everyone except ourselves.
A gift I gave myself, that has provided pleasure not only to me but to my
loved ones and friends, is a bread machine. It's been giving us enjoyment
for over two years now. As I needed more hours in the day, one of the
pleasures I gave up was making bread. I learned that this machine could give
me the home-made result I wanted for only a few minutes of time. If it
hadn't been for GEnie's Food and Wine RoundTable I would never have been
introduced to this wonderful gift.
GEnie is bursting with gift ideas like that. Some of them help you do more
in less time. Some are just for fun. And some of these gifts can help you do
your job better, or help someone else do something better, easier or
quicker.
As we explore GEnie this month in NetSearch, think about the gift potential
of these files -- for yourself as well as for others. And have a wonderful
Holiday Season!
NOTE: In the listings below, L designates the Library in which a file can be
found (for GEnie Front End programs), while F indicates a File number.
Munchies: Breadmachine Recipes ............................... Keyword: FOOD
────────────────────────────── Page: 1150
The aroma of baking dill-herb bread wafts through the house as I write this.
Few munchies are better than a slice of fresh-baked bread covered with your
favorite topping. With this file, you'll have a serious dilemma: which ones
will you make first? The recipes here are in Meal Master format, for import
into a popular recipe database. You don't need that program to enjoy the
recipes in this file. You can read them in any text editor or word
processing program. Munch away!

Online: Meet Mark Walsh, GEnie's New President ............ Keyword: GENIEUS
────────────────────────────────────────────── Page: 150
GEnie has a new boss, Mark Walsh, and he's bringing gifts for everyone on
GEnie this holiday season. You can learn more about Mark and GEnie's plans
in this transcript of a Conference held in GENIEus. Mark talks about GEnie
today and his vision for the future. Subjects addressed here go from pricing
to access speeds and everything in between, including the full Internet
access that is planned for GEnie by the start of 1995. This is a text file.

Fight: Rush Limbaugh versus F.A.I.R. ........................... Keyword: PF
──────────────────────────────────── Page: 545
As I write this, three rounds have been completed in the war of words
between Rush Limbaugh and F.A.I.R. In the right corner is Rush, as fans
fondly call him (and enemies, too). In the left corner is Fairness and
Accuracy in Reporting (F.A.I.R.), who struck the first hit with their 'Reign
of Error" report. Who's going to win this rain of words? What are they
battling about? Do you really care? Well, you won't find out unless you
download these files. By the time you read this, Round Four may have
started. Be sure to keep current in the Public Forum. Decide for yourself:
Is all fair in love and war?
Round One:

Free Stuff: Copyright-free Articles for Publications ......... Keyword: HOSB
──────────────────────────────────────────────────── Page: 370
If you're responsible for a newsletter or know someone who is, do yourself
(or your friend) a favor with these copyright-free articles. They're
provided at no charge as long as you cite the source. They provide good
filler material on everything from health care reform to food to public
relations to the Internet and more. Give the gift of time to a busy editor.
These self-extracting files will dissolve into plain text on an
IBM-compatible.

Quality Assurance: Postmarks ............................... Keyword: STAMPS
──────────────────────────── Page: 1520
Ever wanted to get a special postmark from the Postal Service? Perhaps you'd
like a unique cancellation on that postcard from an interesting town while
you're traveling. Maybe you need an accurate, readable 'must be postmarked
by' imprint for those special letters or contest entries. These services are
available to you as a Postal Service customer. However, not all clerks are
familiar with the Philatelic Postmarking requirements. With this text file,
not only will you know what can and can't be done, you can make sure the
clerk knows what services can be provided. Consider it a gift of quality
assurance.

History: John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Speech .................... Keyword: PF
─────────────────────────────────────────── Page: 545
As we move into the future, give yourself the gift of time travel by reading
John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Speech. "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not
what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. My
fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what
together we can do for the Freedom of Man." Kennedy was talking about
gift-giving; the kind that every person can give to every other person.
Something to think about during this Holiday Season.

Writing: Outline Your Novel in Thirty Minutes ............. Keyword: ROMANCE
───────────────────────────────────────────── Page: 1330
It's said that everyone has a novel inside just waiting to burst out. The
big question, of course, is HOW to get it from your head onto paper. If
you've considered writing a novel, give yourself a jumpstart by downloading
this text file. It will help you outline the events and characters you want
to include. Indeed, the techniques discussed here can help in many different
kinds of writing.

Television: Keeping Up with the Satellites ..................... Keyword: CE
────────────────────────────────────────── Page: 346
Whether it is small and unobtrusive or huge and highly visible, satellite TV
is a gift you might give yourself. When you're ready to explore more than
what came with the instruction book, head over to the Consumer Electronics
Library for this file. Robert Smather's South Scanner Chart lists more
information on various satellites and what's available than you ever
imagined existed. Happy viewing!

Taxes: They Cometh ............................................ Keyword: TAX
────────────────── Page: 1040
If you simply can't wait to get started on your 1994 taxes, head to the Tax
and Accounting RoundTable and download the complete instructions for the
start of it all: Form 1040 and the major schedules. To read this file after
it is unzipped you'll need the Adobe Acrobat Reader, available in the Tax
RoundTable Library for DOS, Windows and Macintosh. With that reader, you can
print -- in approved IRS format -- ALL of the many tax forms that are
available here. It doesn't make doing your taxes painless, but starting now
can be a lifesaver when you're searching for that one last form the evening
of April 15.

Crafts: Making a Card with a Moving Part ..................... Keyword: ARTS
──────────────────────────────────────── Page: 1510
One gift that's easier to make than you'll ever believe is a card with a
moving part. You can send something from the heart that is every bit as neat
as the store-bought varieties, and is special simply because you made it.
And you don't even need to be particularly artistic if you use rubber stamps
or computer-printed designs. This file, one of a series of online classes by
Cat McGuire, describes making a postcard with a concealed moving part, but
its techniques can be varied for any kind of card.

The Law: A Controversial Case .............................. Keyword: CANADA
───────────────────────────── Page: 1225
This case is as fascinating as any that have been on TV: A 65-year-old
woman, who is partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, was sexually
assaulted by the husband of an acquaintance. The accused is an alcoholic and
was drunk. He claims no awareness of the assault. Is he guilty or innocent?
Hint: It's not as simple as it seems on the surface. This Canadian case
makes for fascinating reading and defines the defence (or "defense" in
American English) of voluntary intoxication in the context of sexual
assault.

Endings and Beginnings: Auld Lang Syne ....................... Keyword: MIDI
────────────────────────────────────── Page: 430
As 1994 draws to a close and 1995 approaches, this song represents both
goodbye and hello. It is offered here in Standard MIDI format, complete with
lyrics. Most of all, it gives the gift of friendship:
And here's a hand, my trusty frien'
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Thanks for being with me in 1994 for NetSearch, my GEnie friends. I hope
you're looking forward to 1995 with me!
